When to hire a gazebo instead of a marquee
A gazebo is a light framed canopy, open on all sides unless side walls are added, and it is pitched in minutes rather than hours. A marquee is a larger walled structure built for a seated function. The practical dividing line is guest count and purpose: below roughly 35 standing guests, or where the structure only has to shelter a bar, a buffet or a registration desk, a gazebo does the job for less.
Three points decide it in most Cape Town bookings:
- Guest numbers. Above about 40 seated guests a gazebo stops being practical and marquee tent hire is the right structure.
- Function. Gazebos shelter a station — bar, food, gifts, sound desk. Marquees and stretch tents shelter the event itself.
- Ground and access. A gazebo fits driveways, courtyards and small lawns where a larger frame will not pitch. For a firm-ground site with an awkward shape, pagoda tent hire is often the better middle option.
Gazebo sizes and how many guests each one holds

Standing figures assume a drinks or buffet layout with no seating. Seated figures assume round tables with chairs and room to walk between them. Add a second gazebo rather than overfilling one — two 3 m × 3 m units cover more usable ground than a single crowded 3 m × 6 m.

A wedding gazebo is most often used for the drinks reception, the gift table or the ceremony point itself, with the seated meal under a larger structure. For a birthday or garden party a single 3 m × 6 m gazebo usually covers the food and bar and leaves the lawn open. For a corporate stand or market day, the 3 m × 3 m unit is the standard footprint that fits most allocated pitches.
Gazebos and the Cape Town south-easter
Wind is the constraint that catches out most gazebo bookings in Cape Town. The south-easter blows hardest from November to February, exactly the months most outdoor events are booked, and a gazebo is the lightest structure on any site. Two things follow from that.
- Anchoring is not optional. On grass the frame is pegged; on paving, decking or a rooftop it must be weighted. An unanchored gazebo will move in a moderate south-easter.
- Side walls act as sails. Walls add shelter but also add wind load. On an exposed Atlantic Seaboard or False Bay site, leaving one or two sides open is usually safer than closing the structure in.
On a genuinely exposed site, or for a summer wedding on the coast, a pegged frame tent or a marquee will hold where a gazebo will not. Tentation will say so when quoting rather than supply a structure the site cannot carry.
